Super excited that a beauty story I collaborated on with a great team is in the Spring/Summer 2013 issue of THE LINEN MAGAZINE. This was definitely one of my favorite projects to be involved in, and it took a lot of planning and inspiration to pull off. It made me stretch myself creatively which was uncomfortable and stressful at times, but I’m so glad I took this on. The beauty story is called “Alien Beauty,” and as you can see on the inspiration board, I tried to find items that I could incorporate into the makeup to tell the story. I had some ideas in my head, but really got inspired while walking around Michael’s craft store.

From a makeup standpoint, I didn’t want a sci-fi or gory type of alien concept, but instead a beautiful, layered story with various looks from clean to intense, and a lot of textures from the makeup and materials used throughout. From the above inspiration board and several others, I created 8-10 makeup looks that ultimately became the story below. As I continue to grow and push myself as an artist, I encourage anyone reading this post to do the same no matter what your industry. Be open to inspiration. It can come from the most unlikely of places. Embrace challenges. And get uncomfortable. You’ll learn a lot about yourself when you do. Hope you enjoy “Alien Beauty.”

Makeup for “It’s Only Natural” Public Education Campaign

It’s been busy, busy on my end and unfortunately I haven’t been able to blog as frequently as I’d like to. One of the projects that kept me busy was doing makeup for “It’s Only Natural,” a multimedia public education campaign that launched recently to offer African-American mothers in particular, breastfeeding knowledge, help and support.

Yours truly not only did makeup for all of the mothers featured in the video; I was also part of the campaign! I shared my breastfeeding experiences when nursing my three kids which includes the recent addition of twin boys.

According to the official press release from the Department of Health and Human Services:

It’s Only Natural was developed to equip new moms with practical information and emotional support from peers, as well as tips and education about the benefits of breastfeeding and how to make it work in their own lives. All of the material is uniquely crafted for African American women. Materials include:

video testimonials from new moms talking about the challenges they have overcome, providing breastfeeding tips, sharing their individual stories, and much more;
articles on a variety of topics ranging from laws supporting breastfeeding to how to fit breastfeeding into your daily life;
two fact sheets, which contain proper holding and latching techniques, as well as information on managing discomfort and how much milk is enough; and
radio public service announcements.

Spring Has Finally Sprung

Helloooo Spring! Excuse my excitement but my week is going great, and I know the warm air and sunshine have something to do with it. It also didn’t hurt that I was part of a gorgeous wedding over the weekend that was simply stunning! My beautiful bride Sara married Joe, the man of her dreams, at the National Museum of Women in the Arts and it was beau-TEE-ful! I won’t even bother posting my too dark, won’t-do-it-justice iPhone pics. Professional pictures to come, but for now, head over and get a preview from photographer Abby Grace’s blog. She’s a phenomenal photographer, and I can’t wait to see what other images she captured.

Check out the April issue of EDITORIAL Magazine. It has some fabulous editorials, and a shoot I worked on was also picked up for the issue. Woohoo! We had a great team working on this shoot which was shot by Katherine Gaines of AmbientEye Photography. A few of the images are in the gallery below.

While flipping through the digital version of the magazine, I also fell in love with the concepts and final images of editorials on pages 56-63. Definitely check out the latest issue here if you can. I think you’ll agree the images are hot!

NARS Artistry Sessions: Radiant Creamy Concealer How-to

I was “window shopping” for makeup the other day with a friend and stopped by the NARS counter. Why did I ever do that? Not to worry. I didn’t break the bank. In fact, I was good. I didn’t purchase anything but I was tempted. Very tempted. I just really love the NARS line. The range of colors and products. The highly pigmented formulas. The creaminess of certain foundations and concealers I played with. Me and my friend were like two kids in a candy store. (Note to self: Mail your application for the artist program ASAP!) Coverage+Conceal+Contour Palette by AJ Crimson

So the latest joy in my kit is AJ Crimson’s Coverage+Conceal+Contour Palette. I learned about the foundations from a fellow MUA on Instagram. He’s a self-professed makeup junkie so if he liked them, then I knew I had to try them.

This palette is perfect in that it allowed me to try all eight foundation shades without having to purchase the full sizes. I have used it on my everyday clients, several weddings and some photo shoots and it delivers on so many levels. If you’re a working makeup artist like myself, then you know firsthand how heavy our kits can be. I’m always looking to streamline and condense, and this palette is great for that alone because it’s multipurpose.

As the name says, you can use it to cover, conceal and contour. So instead of packing separate foundations, concealers and contour colors, this palette literally does it all. I definitely agree with AJ’s philosophy in that foundation can double as concealer.

So the actual size of the palette is definitely compact. Think travel size. (Side note: It would be great to see this in a bigger pro palette for makeup artists.) It includes all eight shades of the full size cream foundations. Perfect for dropping in your purse for touch-ups on the go. I really like the formula because a little goes a long way. The company website says it “melts into the skin” and that would be correct. It goes on so smoothly and is very pigmented. It’s a cream but totally lightweight and very buildable. So if sheer coverage is your thing or you want to build a flawless full coverage look, you can achieve that with this palette. The shades can also be mixed to create other tones.

Another thing I like about the foundation formula is that it leaves your complexion looking very smooth and creamy. I do suggest setting it with a loose translucent powder so the product doesn’t transfer. And it’s great to know that it’s all natural and paraben free.

Makeup + Hair Shoot

I was inspired to embrace my natural hair again after working a hair shoot with fab hairstylist Tiffany Naté and one of her friends who turned out to be quite the model if I don’t say so myself. Meet Davitta Callaham, aka Vitta. And yes, that’s all of her hair.

It makes me feel good to see so many sistas embracing their natural hair. I have been natural on several occasions but was limited in my styling options. But now, there are so many ways to rock natural hair that I have been re-inspired. I loved the two styles that Tiffany created on Vitta for the shoot. From free spirit to sophisticated lady.

I can definitely see a bride rocking this for her big day!

Vitta has a great blog, Uniquely Curly, that you should check out. It tells of her own journey of going natural and is full of health and wellness information not just for your hair, but mind and body. There’s also great natural hair styling ideas and spotlights on other “naturally unique beauties.”

It was great working with Tiffany and Vitta. And photographer Beverli A. captured some great shots again.
